Your server. Your apps.

Start with your own server — OpenBSD or Linux — or use an app to join an existing one. These are releases from the beta channel.

Beta stays on a selected release until the next promotion. Alpha receives new features and fixes earlier. Choosing this page does not switch an installed app's channel; a new installation asks which update channel to follow.

OpenBSD server · amd64

r1761-server · 73.9 MB · manifest signed 2026-09-30

The server binaries, including the installer, original manifest and release signature. Project hosting, history, collaboration and administration tools on your own machine.

What’s new

  • Security: Security improvements
  • Security: Improved protection of public links against repeated password guessing.
  • For administrators: Server updates now also install the current man pages.
  • For administrators: Public-sharing services now require Unix sockets; TCP configurations require migration.
  • For administrators: Antivirus rejection storage can be limited without shortening file retention.
8 more changes
  • For administrators: Mobile download size can be limited; the server checks free space before preparing the file.
  • For administrators: Concurrent mobile downloads can share a storage limit; the server reclaims buffers left by interrupted downloads.
  • For administrators: The server reclaims interrupted shelf upload buffers while preserving active transfers and accepted jobs.
  • For administrators: Import limits also cover intermediate files; exceeding the limit stops the import without replacing the repository.
  • For administrators: The server reports critically low disk space to the client app so it can pause new publications.
  • Fix: Uploading a folder from a phone does not overwrite a newer edit made concurrently on another machine.
  • Fix: Fixed public share creation with large file lists.
  • Fix: A failed individual request no longer stops the public links service.

Earlier changes are not described here.

The .tar.gz archive is assembled from verified release files. The signature covers the original manifest; the SHA-256 above covers the complete archive.

Linux server · amd64 new

r2360-server-linux · 78.6 MB · manifest signed 2026-10-28 · channel alpha-linux

The same FileES server on Debian 13 and Fedora: binaries, installer, PAM module, SELinux policy and scheduled maintenance (systemd or cron). A build without a sandbox — only OpenBSD gives full process isolation. Its own update channel, independent of the OpenBSD server.

What’s new

  • Fix: Completed writes with failed cleanup no longer permanently block server updates.

Command-line client · Linux and OpenBSD new

Version 0.1.0 · release r2016-cli, signed 2026-10-08 · channel cli

The standalone filees-client: one command synchronizes a folder with a FileES server and exits. No daemon and no window, also for a folder without an SVN working copy — for scripts, cron and machines without a desktop. It does not replace the desktop app and does not update itself.

What’s new

  • Standalone 0.1.0 for Linux and OpenBSD synchronizes files without a daemon, including folders without an SVN working copy.
  • Fix: The command-line client publishes files in new working-copy subfolders.
  • Fix: Large-file downloads wait for the server's final confirmation; interrupted operations can finish without downloading again.

The simplest way on Windows: no SmartScreen warning. Install one of them — the Store version or the installer below.

Running the AppImage

Check the hash, make the file executable and run it. The first run installs FileES into your home directory; later runs start the installed version. A newer AppImage run over an existing installation upgrades it; an older one never takes it back:

sha256sum FileES-0.1.19.2028-x86_64.AppImage
chmod +x FileES-0.1.19.2028-x86_64.AppImage
./FileES-0.1.19.2028-x86_64.AppImage

The first command must print the SHA-256 above.

What you need

  • Windows: Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11, with WebView2 (built into Windows 11). The SSH and Subversion clients are built in.
  • Linux: x86-64 with GTK 4 version 4.10 or newer and WebKitGTK 6; the background service runs under your user's systemd. The SSH and Subversion clients are built in.
  • On both: access to a FileES server and an invitation from its administrator. Installing does not give you cloud storage.

Windows: SmartScreen will warn you

The installer is not signed with an Authenticode certificate. Windows may say “Windows protected your PC” — to continue, choose More info → Run anyway. Only do that if the file came from this page and its hash matches:

Get-FileHash .\filees-0.1.19.2028.msi

The result must equal the SHA-256 above. That hash comes from the release manifest signed with the FileES release key, and this page is only built after that signature checks out.

What gets installed

  • No administrator rights on either system; it installs into your own directory: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\FileES on Windows, ~/.local on Linux.
  • Two programs: a background service that looks after your files, and the app window. The service is kept running by Startup on Windows and by your user's systemd on Linux.
  • Later versions arrive through a signed update channel, and you confirm each install in the app. On Linux this works from version 0.1.16.1365 on — if you have an older one, download the new AppImage from this page and run it once: it upgrades the existing installation and keeps your configuration.
  • Uninstalling never removes your configuration, working copies or files.
